My Story Counts
You have something to say, a story to tell, something you want to change in the world and you want to make your story count. You’ve been told to write a book, to start a blog, to do SOMETHING to share your wisdom with the world, you just don’t know where to start.
How would it feel to be able to articulate the change you want to make in the world and, importantly, who you would like to help by being the voice of change?
How would it feel to know that you can make your story count in a way that won’t negatively affect your family and friends? I know that we’re supposed to be enlightened folk who do not have one fuck to give to the opinions of others, but in reality, the enlightenment wavers, doesn’t it?!
How would it feel to have an easy process to follow so that you know exactly where to start, which order to do things in and how to do so without selling your soul?
How would it feel for someone to send you a message, thanking you for sharing your experience and enabling them to know that they’re not alone, there is a way forward for them.
I’ve done it; I’ve turned my story into books, blogs and a social enterprise. Admittedly the social enterprise happened by accident but once you start this journey, you never know where it will take you. You just have to start.
It’s scary. I know.
- What if people actually read it?
- Will people treat me differently if they know my story?
- Will I upset people by sharing my experience?
- Will I be judged?
Yes, people will read it! When you are ready to hit ‘publish’ or send your manuscript to agents/publishers, you will be comfortable with sharing the story you have written. You are in control. Nothing appears in writing that you haven’t made a decision about and you can always take my favourite approach and turn your story into fiction!
Maybe people will treat you differently. Some might not know what to say, some might thank you for your candid approach to a subject they wish they could discuss more openly. In all honesty, most people are too busy with their own lives to focus too much on yours. The people that matter most in your life will support you, love you through the process and laugh with you as they always have done.
You might upset people, I suppose. You have control over what you write about so you can decide what you do or don’t share. You can talk to the people in your life about what you’re doing and why it matters to you. If the people you’re worried about upsetting are no longer in your world, then I’d question whether it matters. Sometimes, people need to realise there are consequences to their actions. If they didn’t want to be the baddie, they should have been nicer to you!
Will you be judged? Probably, yes! No matter what you do, or don’t do, someone will judge you. I have found that the people who understand my message, who are alongside me or who have published more books or have more established blogs are the most incredible, supportive and generous folk I could have the pleasure to meet and learn from. Judgement doesn’t come from those people as they’re too busy changing the world in their own way. I choose to focus on being counted among them and nothing else.
Whatever your story, if you would like to share it in a way that is authentic and safe for you, it can be done. I have worked on books and blogs by; survivors of sexual violence, reformed gang members, cancer survivors and people with a terminal or degenerative illness, military personnel, athletes, business owners, people with dyslexia who believed writing wasn’t for them, personal development and business coaches, sports coaches, social entrepreneurs and refugees, to name a few!
The mug says ‘we’re not what happened to us!’ You can read that however you choose!
Without exception, sharing their story in their own way was transformative for them and their readers.
Without exception, they started the process believing they would never be able to do it.
Without exception, they are now authors, bloggers and people making significant social impact.
You can ignore this. You can say that the time isn’t right, that you’re too busy or that it’s ok for everyone else, but this won’t happen for you. Shut down this page and you’ll probably be right. Or, you could start now. It won’t cost you anything except time and the first glimmer of hope that actually, it could happen for you.
What if you did just download a freebie? What if you just made a cuppa and had a quick look?
There was a time that I never believed it would be possible for me to be a published author. Not me! A blog? Are you joking? Admittedly, when I first started writing, blogging was one of those new-fangled things that I believed would never take off. Am I showing my age?
I wrote without expectation. I wrote because there was something I wanted to say. I wrote because I wanted to see if I could. I wrote because I needed to write.
The rest, as they say, is history!
If you have made it this far, there’s something inside you that won’t let the dream go, isn’t there?
If you have ever walked past a bookshop and imagined your own book in that display window, you owe it to yourself to start writing.
It’s free! You have nothing to lose.
Yep, this is free too! Again, you have nothing to lose.
I can write your blogs for you, help you to structure and/or write your book or write your book for you. It’s easier than you think to get your message out into the world.
